About Lizzy

The amputation of my lower leg has changed my life. I started looking for a new sport and discovered wheelchair tennis. Since then I haven’t done anything else. Below you can read more about my tennis career.

My name is Lizzy de Greef, born on April 7. I live in Alphen aan den Rijn and I was born with a clubfoot. When I was seven years old we decided to amputate the clubfoot. When I was eleven years old we decided to amputate my right lower leg. After this surgery a whole new world opened up to me and so, I discovered wheelchair tennis and instantly I knew that was what I wanted to do!

In 2015 I started training and ever since that first training I haven’t stopped and I have only been growing and achieving milestones. At the moment I’m very busy with training and playing matches. I have practice six days a week, of which four days at the National Tennis Centre in Amstelveen.

As a youth player U18 I was able to put many great titles to my name. For instance, I have won the junior world championships in 2020 and 2022. Furthermore, I was invited to join the Dutch junior team at the World Team Cup in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022, from which we have won a bronze medal twice. These results motivated me to work even harder.

After graduating from high school in 2021, I started playing tennis full-time. Things have been moving fast ever since. In 2023, I played my first Grand Slam at the US Open. It was a truly special experience! I’ve since competed at all the Grand Slams and even reached the quarterfinals in singles several times. I’ve won several major titles, including the ABN AMRO Open and two times at the Georgia Open. I’m also proud to have represented the Netherlands three times at the World Team Cup on the women’s team, winning one silver and two gold. The highlight so far is qualifying for the Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024. That was truly a dream come true!

All this development and the hard training have already given me many wonderful experiences. My next goal is to qualify for the Paralympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
